![]() The couple itself and their connection really won me over with this one. There were definitely a couple times where I wanted to shake the main characters for decisions they were making, but they also tried to be smart about their bad decisions if that makes sense. The romantic suspense plot line was multi layered as usual with a Catherine Cowles story. I thoroughly enjoyed how they could read each other, and that even though they’re not good at opening up, they definitely work at trying to be very honest and straightforward with each other. Their friendship is such a perfect foundation for a relationship. There’s just something about their connection over the years and how they come back together. I honestly can’t stop thinking about them. While I love a good romantic suspense plot line–one of the reasons I always adore Catherine’s books–the couple really was EVERYTHING in this book! The funny part is that I’m not a huge fan of the friends to lovers trope, but Catherine seriously killed it with Nash and Maddie. ![]() ![]() Review: The Hartleys are proving to be a new favorite book family for me! I love that we get to know them more with each book. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Wizard Hunters is set about thirty years after the end of The Death of the Necromancer and involves travel to another world/dimension completely unlike Ile-Rien, the home of the main characters. ![]() The Death of the Necromancer took place a couple of centuries later in Ile-Rien's history and showed it in a more nineteenth century period, complete with gas light and trains. The Ile-Rien of The Element of Fire is based on a seventeenth century time period where magic exists and the world of Fairy is a very real threat to the human inhabitants. The Wizard Hunters is something of a departure for me, even though it revisits my favorite setting of Ile-Rien, which was introduced in my first novel The Element of Fire and appeared again in The Death of the Necromancer. This was really funny and I laughed out loud lots of times. I loved how seamlessly Margo being autistic and Jewish was weaved into the story and how Abbie's BFF is slowly revealed as the asshole she really is, and how the reader realizes how lonely poor Abbie is, despite the confident hot queer girl vibes. I loved Margo in all her sweet naive baby dykeness right away Abbie got off to a rough start (intentionally, I think, on the authors' part) so if you're a bit wary of her at first, keep reading. Margo is an overachiever who wants to ace her newfound gayness, so she enlists Abbie, a tomboy skater girl who's been out as queer forever to "teach her how to be gay" Abbie needs help bringing up her grade in history, a subject Margo loves, so it's an even trade. ![]() ![]() A delightful and surprisingly horny/sex-positive queer YA romance / coming of gayge book where two opposites-attract teen girls fall for each other. ![]() ![]() It is, however, "the beginning of a beautiful friendship" that continues throughout the series. London is already friends with Corto and introduces the sailor to the unpredictable Russian, who even as a young man kills with disconcerting ease and is ready to lie and betray without hesitation. The protagonist of this tale is not the 18-year-old Corto but Rasputin, a deserter from a Siberian rifle regiment, and the writer Jack London, who was a war correspondent in the region at that time. This short adventure tells the backstory of Corto Maltese first meeting Rasputin at the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. ![]() If you use the "Add to want list" tab to add this issue to your want list, we will email you when it becomes available. ![]() |
